How to keep cut flowers fresh
Sadržaj
1. Kako zadržati svježe rezano cvijeće.
Remember that all our flowers come with a 7-day freshness guarantee, but there are a few simple ways to extend the life of your flowers even more!
To begin with, all (or almost all!) species must follow a few basic rules:
Fill the vase halfway with water.
Choose a vase that complements the bouquet – a tall, narrow vase, for example, is ideal for supporting tall or tall stems. Fill your vase with fresh, room temperature water that is not too hot or too cold.
2. Ulijte hranu za cvijeće.
Mix in flower food. This helps restore the nutrients the flowers would have received from the soil and also keeps the water clean and bacteria free.
You can prepare flower food yourself by mixing one liter of water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of sugar. Another tried and true substitute is one teaspoon of sugar mixed with a few drops of bleach, vodka, or some other clear alcohol, as well as 14 cups of fizzy lemonade. Others swear by copper coins and crushed aspirin, which lower the pH of the water (makes it more acidic) so it can travel up the stems more quickly and prevent wilting.
3. Pripremite svoje cvjetove
At a 45-degree angle, cut at least 2 cm (about one inch) from the end of each stem. This increases the surface area of the flowers, which allows for more water intake and prevents them from lying flat on the bottom of the vase. Trim the stems every few days with sharp scissors to avoid crushing them.
Remove all leaves from the vase that will be submerged in water; otherwise, they can rot and release bacteria.
4. Izložite svoje cvijeće
Keep your vase away from the fruit bowl! Fruits that are about to ripen release a gas called ethylene, which shortens the life of the flowers. Bananas are the worst offenders.
Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, which can burn the petals, as well as cold drafts and heat sources, which can cause dryness.
It’s been proven that putting your flowers in the fridge every night can make them last longer, but who has room in their fridge for a vase full of flowers?!
Ruže
Roses are known for their transience, but with proper care, they can survive up to 12 days. They are a thirsty species that prefer deeper, tepid water to thrive.
Avoid cramming too many stems into a vase; roses require space to open (our bouquets arrive in buds for maximum longevity) and tend to mold if placed too close together.
Did you know that the brown, sad-looking outer petals are known as guard petals and should be removed? They are only there to protect the tender rose bud. Gentle peeling won’t ruin your flowers, but it will help them look prettier for longer!
Ljiljani dižu ruke
Who hasn’t had lily pollen stain his clothes yellow? We assume you are all of them. It is interesting to note that lily petals also despise pollen! It corrodes all the petals it comes in contact with, shortening the life of the flower. Stargazer lily pollen is the easiest to remove as it is retained on the stamens that protrude from the center of the flower and can be gently detached.
Suncokreti
Sunflowers have large flower heads that may fall if not properly supported. Display them in a tall vase so that they are upright. Since they have more leaves than other types, make sure to remove all leaves below the water line. Sunflowers require a lot of water, so keep the vase filled and fresh for best results.
Tulipani
Since tulips continue to grow after cutting, use a tall vase to support the stems and prevent them from drooping and snapping. Trim the ends if necessary. Since tulips naturally bend towards the sun, it’s a good idea to rotate the vase every few days.
Orhideje
Orchids have a reputation for being difficult to care for, and they can be, but the benefits are well worth the effort. Being a tropical plant, replicating their ideal circumstances (hot and humid) could be difficult.
Trim back any dead leaves or decaying petals regularly to keep the colorful flowers looking good. If your orchid’s leaves are bright green, you know it’s getting enough light.
Transplant the potted orchid into nutrient-rich soil after the flowers have dropped to encourage additional growth. Cut the stem at the base if the leaves are wilted or if the plant is short to give it time to recover before reblooming.
